CARE Campaign

The NHIT CARE Campaign was launched in response to Hurricane Maria to restore and stabilize healthcare services in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In the immediate aftermath, NHIT coordinated emergency aid by distributing essential resources to over 100 clinics, including internet connectivity, smartphones, laptops, and “Clinic in a Box” kits—ensuring providers could continue delivering care despite widespread infrastructure damage. In partnership with Sprint, Healthcare Ready, and other allies, the campaign focused on reconnecting patients with care, medical records, and communication networks. Beyond the emergency response, NHIT led long-term recovery efforts by promoting health IT innovation and resilience through congressional briefings, webinars, and health equity summits. A major milestone of the campaign was securing $14.9 million from HHS-CMS to establish a Health Information Exchange in the U.S. Virgin Islands, marking a significant step toward a more equitable and sustainable healthcare system.
